The number of storage facilities destroyed by fire increased by 42% in 2019/20
According to the trade body Self-Storage Association UK, there are 1,500 self-storage sites in the UK. These buildings may well be built to fully comply with building regulations, but only warehouses above 20,000m2 require sprinkler protection. The very nature of their design and the fact that each customer storage unit has an open top and potentially contains tightly packed flammable items only, serves to remind us how vulnerable to fire these buildings are.
