Warehouse, Leicester
Despite a relatively small footprint, five fire crews were unable save a textile warehouse when a fire broke out. The building, located in one of Leicester’s prime industrial areas, was completely destroyed in the fire.
Firefighters were called to a single storey commercial building used for storage and sales of fabric in an industrial estate in Wenlock Way, Leicester on 29th December 2019.
The roof of the building collapsed during the blaze and the factory owners, who did not wish to be named, said the building was “totally destroyed”.
The roof of the building contained asbestos but Public Health England (PHE) said it was unlikely people were exposed to the substance.
A spokesman said: “We were called to a building fire in Wenlock Way at 11.20am, with an asbestos roof involved in fire. Four breathing apparatus and two main jets and two hose reels were in use.”
Local roads were closed and buses at the adjacent CentreBus depot had to be moved away from the immediate area so that fire crews could get to the rear of the blaze. It is thought the building was empty when the fire broke out.
MP for Leicester East Claudia Webbe said: “A huge thanks to emergency services and fire crews working hard to tackle and contain a large fire in a factory building on the Wenlock Way industrial estate, Leicester. Nearby roads are closed.”
Following Fire Investigation, the cause is believed to have been an electrical fault within a light fitting in the warehouse.
